Some in the West have been touting China’s “overcapacity” in the new energy industry as a threat. This is a new narrative trap targeting China and a fallacy that distorts and/or ignores some key facts:
China’s competitive edge in new energy is achieved not through subsidies, but for good reasons:
early strategic planning & persistent R&D input,
sophisticated industrial & supply chains,
hardworking workforce & numerous enterprising businesses, and
a strong sense of responsibility for the future of the Earth.
Cross-border trade happens only when there is surplus. In that sense, all exports are the result of overcapacity — This is a basic principle in trade.
The US is the world’s largest exporter of agricultural produce, natural gas, and many other products. Why doesn’t it ever apply the same criterion for overcapacity to itself? What a double standard!
